We have had a lot of learning going on this week! I can't believe we have had 30 days of school! In MATH, we have been working on addition strategies to 10. We are grabbing the big number and counting on, making tens, and practicing math facts. One of the fun making 10 videos we start with maths is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFw8qjTnvqQ We have been adding to our Math Journals: Make a 10 Rainbow and Ways to make 10. We've also started working on turn around facts/ related facts! One of the new math partner games we learned this week is Addition Cross Out. In Science this week, we are looking for patterns in the day and night sky. We have watched some time-lapse night sky and day skies. We have observed the day sky and students took home a night sky observation packed that they can do. We will be talking about what we see in the night sky. We will also talk about how the seasons change. This week in WRITING, we've been working on our first Narrative writing piece. Everyone brought in a 'treasure' and told about it (photos are on a earlier blog). We brainstormed and created a graphic organizer. We wrote our topic sentences and shared those. Now we are working on adding details to our writing. This week we started PTR small groups. We are working on segmenting and writing sounds, deciding when to use K or C at the beginning of words, when we need a defender c in a word, and practicing our vowel town. We are also independently using our center stations and browsing baskets! We did our nonsense word assessments this week too.
Next week is our Book Fair. Our class will visit it on Tuesday morning. Tuesday evening is our Family Fun Night. You can enjoy games and activities and visit the book fair as a family too! Our schedule next week is: PE, Music, Counselor, Art, and PE. We check out books on Thursdays so books need to be returned by that day. Next Friday is our awards assembly. Our class earned a popcorn party for collecting the most nickles and we filled our compliment jar so we will have a wow party soon. Have a fantastic weekend! Mrs. C. This week we are writing about My Treasure. Everyone brought in a treasure and shared it with the class. We will be creating a graphic organizer today and then we will begin writing our rough draft on our narrative. We will have our project completed next week. Here are the pictures of our treasures.
Wow have we had a busy and active week! In Science we have been learning about the Scientific Method. We even sang a Scientific Method Song. http://youtu.be/wlb7tLJy5AI We asked questions, made predictions, and tested hypothesis with Oranges and the movement of liquids. We made Oobleck on Friday (sadly I was so busy I forgot to take pictures of it! Sorry). You can make Oobleck at home: http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/oobleck-bring-science-home/ We also wrote about our experiments and I have pictures of that. In Math this week, we worked on addition strategies. We are trying to grab the biggest number and count on (not use fingers for both numbers). We worked on discovering all the ways to make fives and tens. We added 0,1, and 2. We started working in our math journals too! Next week we will be writing about our special treasure. A note went home on Thursday. The special treasure should be at school by Tuesday. This week we worked on nouns, the subject of the sentence, and writing good sentences.
Our specials next week will be: Art, PE, Music, Library, and Art. We check out library books on Thursday. I sent book orders home and they will be due next Friday. Checks made to scholastic please. The Book Fair is coming! Next week we will be collecting change for One For The Books to build up class libraries. Monday we will collect pennies. Have a fantastic weekend!! Mrs. C. My goodness we had a busy and productive week! In Math we took the pre-assessment for adding and subtracting fluently to 10. Then we started on learning ways to make 6, 7, 8, and 9. We also learned how to write number sentences and find the missing part of an addition and subtraction problem. Several friends have been working hard at home on their math fact fluency packets. Thank you! Remember, the letter and the first practice sheet was in the packet from Parent Information Night.
In Social Studies this week, we finished up learning about rules and laws and how they help the common good. I am pretty pleased at how well everyone was able to tell a law and a rule and why we have them! I have some smart cookies! We have been practicing our center rotations and using our browsing baskets. They are really using this time wisely! Next week, we will practice using the mini computers so they can be used during math and small group rotations. I have been assessing sight words! I see so much progress! The class is getting so much better at charting their progress and improvement! Next week our specials will be: Counselor, Art, PE, Music, and Digital Learning. We did get to go to the computer lab this week. We practiced logging in to our district web site.
It is a good thing if everyone brings in a light jacket to wear. We are at the time when the weather can change quickly. Don't forget that we go to the library to check out books on Thursdays so all books must be turned in that morning. Thanks for not sending in candy for snack. I want everyone to eat healthy at snack time. Have a great weekend! Mrs. C. Wow! I can't believe we have had 15 days of school! You would think that this class has been first graders for longer than that! This week in MATH, we have have been working on our learning goal on continuing the counting sequence to 120. More than half the class has mastered at least one of the three targets for this goal (reading numbers out of sequence to 120, writing numbers to 120 (beginning from any number), and counting to 120.). We will continue to work on mastering these goals during Jaguar time next week. Some will be working on going higher than 120! In WRITING this week, we have been working on writing a good sentence with a "who" (subject) and a "do" (predicate). Students have also written independently in their September writing Journal and writing a "Weekend Update". In Small Group Time, we've been practicing our center rotations and I have been assessing sight words! I have several that have passed blue ribbon (they are on order and should arrive soon) words, some that have passed bronze, silver, and gold words! I've got some great readers! Keep practicing these words at home. For those that have passed Gold words, I will be sending home Fry Phrases to practice (not quite ready to pass those out yet). Way to go!!! In Large Group PTR, we continue to work on the sounds in Vowel Town, finding 'what's your name e?' words and helping to reading them, and finding defender c words (k can't stand alone at the end of the word if the vowel does not say it's name) back, pack, luck. Next week, we have an early release on Wednesday. Our special's schedule will be: Library, Art, PE, and Music. We have school pictures next Friday! We will check out books next Thursday. Thanks for sending in some donated items to help our class! I've gotten stickers, play dough, and double sided tape. Thank you so much!! I am sad to announce that today was J.J.'s last day. She is moving to Belton. I know everyone will miss her smiling face! Have a great weekend!!! |
