Holy cow! We've had a lot of learning going on in here! In MATH, we have been working hard on balanced equations and adding and subtracting to 20. I am seeing such great progress. Thanks to everyone that is practicing addition and subtraction at home! When we come back, we will begin working on word problems. This is one reason why being accurate and fluent in our math facts will be so important. We've been working hard to find the parts and wholes in equations and that will be an important strategy in solving word problems. In COMMUNICATION ARTS this week we have also been stretching our brains! In PTR, we have been assessing knowing our letter/vowel sounds, using screech guides to spell, and we even did a baseline test on spelling multiple syllable words. We also tested Nonsense words (if you can blend together sounds and "read" nonsense words, then you have good phonemic awareness and phonics skills. We have also tested sight words. Almost everyone has passed second quarter (bronze words) and several have even passed silver medal words! Aria, Tiffany, Zavier, and Isayah have also passed gold medal words!! In SHARED READING, we have been working on identifying the main topic and 3 important details in a nonfiction passage. We've been using strategies to help us find what is important and the details that let us know that. I see awesome progress. I also re-assessed retelling fiction stories. I see progress in this as well although a few still struggle with finding the problem and solution. In WRITING, I assessed narrative writing and I see a lot of progress there! Now we need to work on conventions (capital letters, punctuation, and using PTR skills to spell). When we return in January, we will be back to spelling and our words will be: thing, long, song, string, king, sang, to, and do. The sentences will be: They sang to the thin king. Do you have a long red string? I love how well most students are using their tablets! Students have started working on Moby Max and Front Row for math and Spelling City for spelling. When we return in January, we will have a new student: Haley Manes will join our class and bring us up to 21! Next week will be a short/busy week. Monday we will be doing some reindeer activities. We'd like to decorate cookies on Tuesday so a sign up genius will go out for donations. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4eabae22a1f85-reindeer Tuesday is an early release day. We will do our traditional school sing along in the morning. We will dismiss at 1:15. We won't have specials on Tuesday so when we return, we will be: Music, PE, Art, and Music. We are going to the library Monday (just for check out) and then we will be back to Wednesday next year. I am so proud at the progress we have made this year! When I see the growth and progress, my heart melts!
Thank you for the support and encouragement I have received while dealing with Sarah's concussion. I know that I hate missing a day (or even the times to drive her when she can only go half days in the afternoon) but the class has been so great with the changes and the substitutes. We will go back to CHM and the concussion clinic on January 14. Here is the link to the sign up genius for our Reindeer Games Day: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0c4eabae22a1f85-reindeer Have a wonderful weekend, a joyous holiday, and a blessed New Year! Mrs. C Goodness this has been a jam packed week! In MATH this week, we continued to work on balanced equations. We worked on finding the parts and the wholes in number sentences. We even used the math balance beam to demonstrate having the same total on both sides of the equal sign. We took an assessment over balanced equations. I loved watching students show what they know and use the strategies. In COMMUNICATION ARTS this week, we were really focusing on Main Idea and Important Details. We have read stories about penguins and tornadoes and found the main topic and then eliminated opinions and off topic things. Then we found important details. This week for Writing, we also worked on Social Studies. We learned how we are alike and how we are different from other people around the world. We compared our homes, schools, food, sports, and birthdays. Next week, we won't have spelling words, We will assess Pathways to Reading skills. We also took the SRI test again on reading skills. I saw some big improvement from the beginning of the year. The children did such a wonderful job in the Musical!! They worked so hard all year learning the songs. They were so focused on giving a great performance! I'm so proud of them! Next week, we have Music, PE, Art, Music, and PE. We go to the Library on Wednesday.
I will be gone Monday. Sarah has a severe concussion and she has to go to CMH and see a concussion specialist. The substitute is great! Don't forget coats! Everyone needs a coat that they can fasten every day! Have a fantastic weekend! Mrs. C. I am amazed that it is December! Where has the time gone? I will be gone Friday so the review is coming home today. In MATH this week, we are focusing on working with equations as a part of adding and subtracting to 20. We are looking to see if the equation is true or false (3+7=11, 15= 6+9). We are using part part whole mats to help us. The class sees why it is so important to be fluent in adding and subtracting. We have also worked with finding the missing addend (12= ___ +4, 11=___-5). We always try to identify the whole, and the 2 parts. We have also added to our math journals! We've started practicing math using FrontRow on our tablets. In COMMUNICATION ARTS, we have also been working hard. We've been focusing on retelling stories in SHARED READING. We made retelling bookmarks and practiced retelling stories. Then with a partner, students videoed (using our tablets) retelling the story! We also have been using flip books to help organize our retelling. We are also starting to work on finding the main topic and important details. In Spelling, we've been practicing with SpellingCity. Our words next week are: which, when, shop, rush, shut, wish, what, who. What can I get when I shop? Who can rush and shut the pen? In Social Studies/Writing, we are learning about other cultures and comparing how we live, eat, and celebrate with other people around the world. Last week in SCIENCE, we explored how Light and Sound travel! We even got to use the Maker's Space in the library to create our own instruments! Last week we met with second and third grade friends. We worked together to get to know each other and created a turkey from a glif. It was so much fun watching these kids work together!! Next week our specials will be: PE, Art, Music, PE, Art. We go to the library Wednesday morning. Our dress rehearsal is Tuesday. Our performance is Tuesday evening. Students need to be dressed and ready to go at their line up spot (not my room) at 6:45. The performance begins at 7. Parents need to keep the coats. My room will be locked. I am looking forward to seeing this performance! It is always so much fun! Please make sure your child is bringing in a coat that they can fasten with either a hood or hat, and gloves. Congratulations to the 13 friends who have passed their second quarter (bronze) sight words! I'm so proud of your hard work and effort! Have a wonderful weekend!! Mrs. C. |
